São Tiago Fortress



São Tiago Fortress is an interesting military construction situated in "Zona Velha" (old town), in Funchal. This Fortress is one of the most visited and appreciated places in Funchal downtouwn. Each year, thousands of locals and tourists visit this amazing place.

This bright yellow monument dates back to the XVII century, but has been enlarged in the XVIII century, following the original design.

Today, you can find here a museum - Contemporary Art Museum - which has a collection of Portuguese contemporary art, dating back to the 1960's to the present day. Besides, it also organizes temporary and thematic exhibitions all year long of various artists and institutions.


Open from Monday to Saturday from 10 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. and from 2 p.m. to 5:30 p.m.
Closed on Sunday and public holidays.
