Terreiro da Luta (Our Lady of Peace)

In 1917, following Funchal’s bombardment by German submarines, a promise was made that if peace returned to the islands, a statue in honour of Senhora do Monte (Our Lady of Monte) would be erected.

Ten years later, the construction of an enormous marble carved statue at Terreiro da Luta, 5 meters high and weighing about twenty tons, was concluded. The foot of the statue has a rosary made with the chains of an anchor from a French vessel, which was torpedoed in the bay of Funchal in 1916.
