The Porto Santo landscape is enlivened by traditional windmills scattered here and there. Because of its considerable flatness, the island is exposed to very strong winds from several quadrants.

The windmills were built to grind cereal for bread making. The first one was built in 1794. This was the largest construction work built on the island in the 18th century.

Later, the island became dotted with picturesque wooden windmills, some of which still work today.
